Ethiopia was advancing its goal of securing access to the sea through strengthened relations with Somalia, said Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Getachew told APA News Ethiopia’s trade existence depended on access to the sea.

He said during recent diplomatic engagements, the leaders of Ethiopia and Somalia had reaffirmed their mutual commitment to sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity.

They agreed to collaborate on arrangements to provide Ethiopia with access to the sea.

The spokesperson highlighted the success of Ethiopia’s diplomatic efforts with Somalia, particularly in the realm of political diplomacy.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Somalia marked a renewed phase in bilateral relations, focusing on cross-border cooperation.

Both nations have agreed to pursue strategic projects that would be mutually beneficial.

Additionally, Ethiopia confirmed its participation in the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia, contributing to peacekeeping efforts in the region.

In a December meeting held in Turkey, Ethiopian and Somali leaders initiated technical discussions aimed at drafting an agreement that respects Somalia’s territorial integrity while facilitating Ethiopia’s access to the sea.
