One of Mozambique’s top bankers has slammed out at the fact that 90% of the country’s heavy-load bulk cargo goes by road.
He also pictured 1 000 trucks a day calling at the Port of Maputo – and the effect of this sort of number on congestion and poorly maintained roads.
“Inconceivable,” said Rui Fonseca, chairman of the Millennium Bim Bank at the ‘Infrastructure and Logistics Challenges’ conference.
“There is no road system in the world that can withstand it.”
And, for a banker, he knows a lot about transport as a former vice-president of the African Union Railways.
