400kg of illicit drugs seized at Sydney Airport

More than 400kg of illicit drugs were seized at Sydney International Airport last week after a joint investigation led to the discovery of 768 Sriracha chilli sauce bottles concealing methyl amphetamine from the US.

The drugs, commonly known as ‘ice’, were intercepted by the Australian Border Force (ABF) after inconsistencies were discovered inside the cargo consignment, which prompted further investigation from ABF officers.

“This has been a complex investigation and we know the methylamphetamine in this import was headed for a clandestine lab in the Sydney Metropolitan area for the extraction process to occur,” said Stuart Smith, NSW State Crime Commander.

Four men have subsequently been arrested in connection with drug trafficking after police found incriminating evidence inside a vehicle and hotel suite relating to the consignment.

“We will conduct further investigations with our law enforcement partners to identify other people linked to the group,” Smith concluded. – Bjorn Vorster
