30 unsafe trucks suspended

A city-wide illegal trucking enforcement operation by the eThekwini Metro Police saw the removal of 30 unroadworthy trucks from the roads.

Metro Police deputy head of operations, Steve Middleton, said that these operations were part of the city’s law enforcement strategy to hold all by-law transgressors accountable.

“It is shocking to find that there are still motorists making use of our roads without the proper documentation. This puts the lives of all our residents and visitors at risk. It is up to us to enforce all laws and to keep unlawful drivers - and unscrupulous trucking companies - off our roads,” said Middleton.

The operation involved the stationing of teams in different parts of the city, targeting hotspots where illegal trucking was known to be common.

“In addition to the 30 trucks we suspended off the road, we apprehended three unlicensed drivers, two drivers without a Public Driver’s Permit (PDP), and two drivers who failed to produced their drivers’ licences on scene,” said Metro Police director, Steve Edwards.

“About 32 trucks had worn-out tyres, 15 had no fire extinguishers, nine had no mud flaps, six had defective brake lights and three had defective indicators,” he added.

Other issues noted were defective hooters, no operating headlights, and cracked windscreens.
