The clearing and forwarding sector is becoming more professionalised due to its competitive nature.
Despite this, it still faces numerous challenges and risks, such as freight rates, transport availability, currency fluctuations, political changes, and an ever-changing customs landscape over which it has no control.
Additionally, it is currently lacking a recruitment pool of skilled, properly trained staff.
However, there is hope, as post-Covid there has been an improvement in both import and export volumes internationally.
The sector is resilient and is growing stronger, but it will remain important for it to be able to mitigate risk from both a local and international perspective.
According to customs liaison manager at Berry & Donaldson, Clifford Evans, there is a dearth of skilled staff.
He said: “As with any industry, new blood isn’t just a requirement, it is a necessity.”
