Seven suspects have been arrested following an attempt to steal personal protective equipment from the cargo section at OR Tambo International Airport (Ortia) over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said that the suspects had entered one of the warehouses at the airport and held staff at gunpoint.
"The manager of the warehouse noticed employees lying on the floor and immediately notified the police and airport security," Muridili said.
She has confirmed that personal protective equipment, including masks and crates of cell phones were found in the suspects’ vehicles.
A shootout between the police and suspects left two people dead and several injured.
"The suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court facing charges of armed robbery," Muridili said.
