The new minister at the helm of the vital transport ministry is former teacher and sports administrator Joe Maswanganyi.

He is a former teacher, he was MEC of Sports, Arts and Culture in Limpopo between 2004 and 2007, and has been a member of parliament since May 27, 2015.

There is very little about the low-profile professional politician on any of the official ANC and government websites.

What we do know is that he was born in Giyani in April 1966.

Maswanganyi obtained a BA from the University of South Africa followed by a secondary teaching diploma from the College of Tivumbeni, according to his official biography on the ANC website.

He taught from 1991 to 1994 before going into politics full time.

His political career before that includes being deputy president of the ANC Youth League from 1998 to 2003.

He is the provincial secretary of the ANC in the Limpopo.

Maswanganyi’s exposure to transport-related matters include being chair of the Public Works Commission in 1997, and serving on the Portfolio Committee on Transport from September 2015 to March 2017, when he was appointed minister.

Maswanganyi replaces Dipuo Peters.
