Major improvement work on the railway system in central Mozambique is of “technically good quality”, according to CFM, the state railway and port authority.
Currently, the 163 million euro project is concentrated on the 575 kilometre Sena Line – linking the Dondo rail station in Sofala to the coal town of Moatize in Tete.
This is being overseen by the Sena Line Reconstruction Brigade (BRLS).
The upgrade is being carried out by the Portuguese Mota-Engil and Edvisa consortium.
The aim is to increase capacity from 6.5 million tonnes to 20 million tonnes per year by February next year.
The other part of the central rail system is the 317km Machipanda Line - linking the Port of Beira to Machipanda in Manica province, on the border with Zimbabwe.
A feasibility study and master plan for the restoration of this line are currently being prepared. When the upgrade is completed, the Machipando Line’s capacity will triple to three million tonnes per year.
