Sanral (The South African National Roads Agency Limited) has started work on the N3 Corridor upgrade.
Ravi Ronny, Sanral eastern region design and construction manager, said in a statement that the Sanral Board was prioritising the upgrade and had called for construction on critical sections to begin in the next two years.
The Corridor will be upgraded in phases over the next eight to ten years. The first phase will focus on the stretch between Cato Ridge and Pietermaritzburg, the Key Ridge realignment and the stretch from EB Cloete to Paradise Valley. This will be completed by 2023.
Ronny said that twelve new routes had been proposed to mitigate the congestion at Town Hall. Of these, a 14km ring road around Pitermaritzburg is currently favoured.
