India is officially the world's second-largest producer and exporter of textiles after China.
The 100-billion-dollar industry is a major source of jobs, providing direct employment to over 45 million people.
Exports grew to US$33.3 billion in 2013 from US$17.6 billion in 2006.
The sector as a whole is expected to expand by around 10% annually between 2009 and 2021, according to India Brand Equity Foundation.
There are more than 2 000 mills - excluding small scale and cottage industries - concentrated mostly in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Other major textile production centres are in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh states.
Top international brands and retailers procure and source fabrics and material from these textile hubs, but poor working conditions at many mills and factories have drawn international criticism.
