Warning issued about incendiary devices in express freight

German authorities have issued a security alert following incidents involving parcels that caught fire while in transit, raising concerns about potential sabotage linked to Russia.

The warning comes after two separate occurrences at DHL's logistics hub in Leipzig, where a package from the Baltic States ignited, prompting investigations by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

The most recent incident involved a parcel containing an incendiary device that set fire to an entire freight container at the Leipzig hub, which serves as DHL's primary airfreight centre.

Fortunately, the fire was extinguished, preventing further damage.

Authorities have noted that these parcels often contain electrical items and liquids, with shipping costs disproportionately high compared to the value of the goods, suggesting a deliberate intent to disrupt logistics operations in Western countries.

In response to these incidents, DHL has implemented enhanced security measures across its European operations to protect its network, employees, and customers.

The company is cooperating fully with ongoing investigations led by the Federal Prosecutor's Office, which has taken charge of the case.

DHL acknowledged that it was aware of two recent incidents involving shipments within its network and was treating the situation extremely seriously.

While the official alerts from the BfV and BKA do not explicitly mention Russia, security sources have indicated that the origin of the parcels and the nature of the incidents raise suspicions of Russian involvement.

This comes amid broader concerns about increasing threats of sabotage linked to Russian activities in Germany and across Europe.

The BfV has previously warned businesses about the potential for Russian sabotage actions.

Authorities are urging vigilance among logistics and aviation companies, as they believe more such incendiary devices may still be in circulation.

The situation remains under scrutiny as investigations continue to ascertain the full extent and implications of these incidents.

As of now, there has been no official response from Russian authorities regarding the incidents. – Source: The Loadstar.
