ED RICHARDSON VOLKSWAGEN SOUTH Africa’s (VWSA) Uitenhage plant has produced 100 000 cars in 2005 – a first for the company. According to spokesperson Heidi Bantam, this is 11 512 more cars produced than in 2004. Andreas Tostmann, managing director of VWSA, says that this is just one of the significant milestones that the car company has achieved this year. In mid-year, the car company started construction of a R750-million paint shop and in October it entered the heavy commercial truck and bus market. VWSA is also to export about 40 000 vehicles to its customers in the Asia Pacific Region. This is described as “an all-time record”. “In addition, we will sell more vehicles in the domestic market this year than any previous year in our history.”
