Uncertainty calls for creative routing

Demand for consolidation services is set to rise amid ongoing global uncertainty. According to Gary Tobias, director of Africa and products at Aero Africa, the conflict in the Middle East has already begun to disrupt logistics flows around the world. “With the conflict in the Middle East impacting air and sea capacity, as well as transit times and pricing, we are seeing increased demand for reliable consolidation solutions,” he told Freight News. Tobias said that in periods of volatility, the focus shifted to developing practical solutions that keep cargo moving as efficiently and reliably as possible. This includes refining consolidation offerings to maintain service and rate stability, while closely monitoring routes, capacity and transit performance. There is also a growing emphasis on identifying value- added opportunities across the supply chain, not only to respond to disruption, but to improve resilience and consistency in an increasingly unpredictable environment. “Through a combination of flexible decision- making, creative routing and a strong partner network, we have been able to maintain dependable product offerings despite ongoing uncertainty in trade,” he said. According to Tobias, import volumes have increased from several regions, including Europe, China, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, further reinforcing the role of consolidation in managing fluctuating demand. He said that the strength of these offerings was underpinned by experienced operational teams and products designed to deliver consistency and reliability, supported by strong relationships across the network. Asked about current operating conditions, Tobias said communication and transparency across the supply chain had become critical. He emphasised the importance of established relationships with agents, clients and airlines in enabling clear and efficient information flow. “A dedicated team focused on communication is key to maintaining efficiency,” he said. However, he added that communication alone was not enough in a market where cargo requirements were becoming more complex. “Above all, we are in the solutions business, driven by delivering the best possible outcomes for each shipment. “Consolidation does not suit every consignment. Many shipments require dedicated services or move on less conventional routings. The ability to offer a broader range of services, including cross- trades, final-mile solutions, onboard courier (OBC) and project cargo requiring specialised handling or charter solutions, is critical to ensuring cargo moves efficiently under varying conditions.” LV
