THE STRONGEST typhoon to hit South Korea in a century smashed into the country’s busiest port of Busan resulting in equipment losses amounting to more than R200-million. With a turnover of 9.46-million TEUs last year, the port handles about 80% of South Korea’s total container volume. Cargo to and from China makes up 62% of Busan’s total transhipment. According to media reports from the region, major shipping lines using the port had not reported any serious delays Ð despite the havoc wrought in certain sections of the port. Three lines on the Far East-SA trade also told FTW that there had been no delays reported to them which would affect SA cargo.
