THERE WAS high drama on Durban's North Pier last Thursday night (April 1) when steering problems caused the Mozline container vessel Tugela to collide with the pier as it was entering port.
Fishermen along the pier scattered for their lives as the 8000 gt ship bore down on them, sparks flying as the crew frantically dropped the anchors in an effort to stop the ship in time. From several eyewitness reports it appears the ship ran aground with its bows on the pier.
However, no serious damage appeared to be done and with the aid of two Portnet tugs the ship was able to reverse and make its way to the container terminal where it discharged its cargo.
It is believed that a team of divers was employed to conduct an underwater inspection of the vessel.
