Transnet Port Terminals
(TPT) is working hard at
trying to find solutions
to Cape Town’s wind
problems, according to
TPT chief executive Karl
Socikwa.
Socikwa told FTW that
calls by the industry to
replace the new Rubber
Tyre Gantries (RTG) used
in the stack with the old
straddle carriers were
not feasible.
He said in all
probability a
combination of RTGs and
straddle carriers would
be deployed at the Port
of Cape Town.
And while the port's
investment plans do
include straddle carriers,
this will take some time.
“A quicker solution
is to move the straddle
carriers from the Port
of Durban where they
are not being utilised
any more to Cape Town.
We have a shipping line
which has offered to
move them for us free
of charge and this is
being considered very
seriously.”
In January alone the
port was wind bound for
more than 250 hours.
