The Western Cape Government
has put out two tenders as part
of its plan to grow the Halal
industry in the province.
Alan Winde, minister of
economic opportunities, last
year announced plans for the
building of a Halal Industrial
Park in the vicinity of the
airport saying that such a
specialised food hub would play
a significant role in boosting
the agro-processing sector.
Last week the province
announced it had called for a
detailed two-phase feasibility
study for a Halal Industrial
Park, including a full analysis
of the Halal industry, mapping
of potential opportunities
and the evaluation of three
proposed sites for the park, at
Stellenbosch, Klapmuts and the
Cape Town Airport.
“Once we’ve reviewed the
outcome of phase one, we’ll
decide whether to proceed with
phase two, which includes the
development of a bankable
business plan for the park
and an in-depth look at some
of our halal industry’s most
competitive sub-sectors,” he
said.
With nearly 44% of Africa
being Muslim, the Western
Cape believes that a halal hub
can significantly increase
exports into Africa.
