MBABANE - Mystery over the delayed opening of Swaziland's new truck weigh station near Matsapha has found an explanation with the admission by the Attorney General's office that enabling regulations are still being drafted by government lawyers. The weigh station was completed two years ago, and is located three kilometres east of Matsapha Industrial Site at the Nhlangano exit of the Matsapha-Manzini highway.
John Bongwe of the Road Transportation Board said South African and other trucks would not be directed to the new facility until we have an operation frame that will have guidelines for the weigh bridge operation, including the cost for users and fines for overloading.
Presently, the R60 fine for overloading trucks utilising Swazi roads is considered grossly inadequate. Bongwe says the fine in South Africa for this offence can be up to R3 000. The training of workers will commence when the Attorney General's office has finished drafting regulations.
Members of Parliament have recently complained about the slow pace of government lawyers' work.
