KEVIN MAYHEW
THERE IS a strong indication that changes to documentation to facilitate cross-border traffic are happening fast for both road and rail freight.
Jeanette Primrose, the sales and marketing manager of Johannesburg-based Clearing Support Services, a specialist software supplier to the freight forwarding industry, says this currently applies to documentation for Trans-Kalahari and Single Administration Documents (SAD).
“The similarity between the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) and SAD documents for Namibia and Botswana and potentially other countries bordering South Africa provides the opportunity for a “real” SAD document for all South African Customs Union (SACU) countries,” she told FTW.
She adds that confusion still exists over the future of the Common Customs Area 1 - is it being phased out or not and, if so, when?
“We understand that South African Customs is involved in no further development on this document so dare one speculate that South Africa is also moving to an SAD-type document?” she asks.
