Sea freight rate hikes prompt move to airfreight

Given the exorbitant increase in sea freight rates, cold chain cargo owners are opting increasingly to use airfreight.According to Sean Petzer, operations manager for Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands at TOWER Cold Chain, with the challenges being experienced in the sea freight sector, airfreight is not only the most efficient way to move temperature-sensitive cargo, but it often also proves to be more cost-effective.“Before Covid-19, we were using predominantly sea freight to reposition our units,” he told Freight News. “But this has now changed as the freight rates have hit all-time highs. In fact, at times the rates are so exorbitant it is sometimes cheaper to airfreight the boxes from a business point of view.”The rates, said Petzer, had had an all-round impact on the market.
