SARS Customs Contingency Measures

Publish Date:
18 Jul 2022

In a media release issued on 15 July the South African Revenue Service (SARS) assured traders and travellers that it would ensure that the following capabilities remained available throughout the duration of the industrial action:

· The processing of declarations will continue as normal;

· Physical inspections of goods will continue as normal, with inspection finalisation being centralised and managed on a 24-hour basis;

· Trade has been engaged about temporary measures instituted in relation to the authorisation and management of SADC certificates of origin for cargo transported across land borders. A letter in this regard has been published on the SARS website;

· Border operations will proceed as normal with the available staff supported by a number of SARS officials deployed from head office and the regions. Clients are encouraged to make use of alternative ports should the need arise.

SARS endeavoured to keep trade informed of any contingency planning relating to the strike and in order to ensure a seamless flow of trade.

It advises that you visit its website regularly for updates on any SARS branches or border posts that may be closed: Latest on the SARS Industrial action impact|South African Revenue Service.

Should you have an urgent issue or query email OSC@sars.gov.za.
