AS THIS issue went to press on Monday morning, a Smit salvage team was still pumping water out of the engine room of Italian cargo ship Jolly Rubino. Spokesperson Clare Gomes said the team was making good progress thanks to the improved weather conditions and reduced wind speeds. Inboard temperatures and excessive smoke had decreased and conditions in the engine room had improved, she said. The vessel was en route from Durban to Mombasa on September 10 carrying a cargo of containerised hazardous, highly inflammable chemicals when it caught fire about 35km off Richards Bay. See page 13.
