On 03 August 2015 the WCO announced that Sacu had developed a Regional Customs Risks Management Strategy through the WCO-SACU Connect Project.
The 13th Steering Committee Meeting of the WCO SACU Connect Project, held on 10-11 March 2015 in Johannesburg, prioritised the development of a Regional Customs Risk Management Strategy. The Strategy Development Workshop was held from 6 -10 July in Pretoria and was attended by officials from all member states’ Customs Risk Management and Enforcement functional areas, the WCO East and Southern Africa Regional Intelligence Liaison Office (WCO ESA RILO), the Trans Kalahari Corridor and Sacu secretariats as well as the regional project manager.
The development of this Risk Management Strategy forms part of the efforts to build capacity in the region to effectively manage risk and execute enforcement towards regional integration and trade facilitation. It specifically focuses on issues affecting the integrity of the Sacu Common External Tariff (CET). The workshop reviewed the first draft strategy document developed by the WCO risk management expert and came up with a revised strategy that has now been submitted to the steering committee for consideration, after which regional risk treatment plans will be developed.
