Exports of South Africanmade vehicles are on a roll, according to Transnet Port Terminals, which has reported a 31% year-on-year growth for August through the Port Elizabeth terminal. This follows Ford’s announcement that it would be using Port Elizabeth for the export of Ranger pick-ups, commonly known as bakkies. Uitenhage-based Volkswagen South Africa is the main user of the terminal. In August, the terminal handled its biggest single shipment: 4 500 units on the Glovis Supreme. The previous record was set in February this year, with 3 481 export units loaded onto the Glovis Sonic, according to Wandisa Vazi, executive manager: containers and automotive, Cape Channel. Year-on-year, Port Elizabeth handled 12 043 vehicles in August 2019 compared to 8 217 vehicles in August 2018.
