South African Revenue Service (Sars) customs officials last Friday seized 437kgs of Viagra at OR Tambo International Airport (Ortia).

The pills, with a street value of R30 million, represent the biggest bust of Viagra pills by customs at Ortia in the past year.

The customs officers became suspicious about the description on the cargo manifest and the consignor.

Police Minister Bheki Cele last week gave his commitment that the South African Police Services (SAPS) would intensify efforts to tackle illicit trade. He made the promise on May 16 during the department’s Budget Vote speech, adding: “The illicit economy is draining valuable resources from the state and its citizens.”
