Putting in an oar to help

FOR THE South African canoe marathon team, winning gold at the 2000 World Canoe Marathon Championships to be held in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on August 27, will be the easy part.
The difficult part for the 38-strong team was getting its canoes to the event. A single kayak measures 5,6m in length while a 2-man kayak comes in at 6,2m. With 21 craft to transport to Canada and back, their only option was container transport, and a 12m container at that.
Thanks to a more than accommodating response from Christensen Canadian African Lines, the canoes will travel by sea to and from the event at no charge. Also putting in an oar were ancillary service providers Caspian Freight, King & Sons, Rail Road Africa, SACD and Spoornet.
The team is hoping to equal or better last year's tally of three gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
