DURBAN HARBOUR truckers are keenly awaiting the next phase of the Cosmos computer system applied to container collection at the terminal.
This is the introduction of a secret PIN (personal identification number) code applicable to each CTO (container terminal order).
It will then be a case of no PIN, no collect, according to Paul Rayner, chairman of the Durban harbour carriers section of SAAFF (SA Association of Freight Forwarders).
This will make the collection system that much more secure, he said, and overcome the problem of people being able to collect containers using false CTOs.
And the introduction is just round the corner, according to Jim Binnie, Portnet's systems manager at the Port of Durban.
We will be testing the system shortly, he told FTW, and implementing it as soon as this is successfully completed.
The other security measure - transponders fitted to each vehicle using the terminal, and identifying them on both entry and exit - is still a little down the road, according to Binnie.
