Over 900 drivers fined in Gauteng

A total of 903 drivers, over the past week, have been given fines and notices for offences since the start of Operation Molao, said the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

The campaign, which is aimed at curbing lawlessness and reducing accidents on the roads, started on 13 May.

Law enforcement authorities involved in the operation included the metro police, provincial and national traffic police, as well as the South African Police Service.

“Authorities have adopted an uncompromising stance on impounded vehicles. They insist that all outstanding fines be paid before vehicles are released.

“Investigations are also been conducted on the vehicles to establish, among others, if the vehicles have been involved in the commission of crime or in crashes for which the drivers were not held accountable,” RTMC said in a statement on Thursday.

Unmarked traffic vehicles will also be deployed in an effort to identify drivers who engage in “reckless and negligent behaviour” such as driving on yellow lanes, overtaking on barrier lines and showing disregard for the rules of the road. – SAnews.gov.za
