NPA summonses Gigaba to appear in court

Former Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba has announced that he is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court to face charges today (Friday).

Gigaba, who oversaw state-owned enterprises, including Transnet, during the Jacob Zuma administration, was notified by the NPA on Friday morning that he must attend court.

He confirmed the summons in a statement posted on X, noting his intent to cooperate with legal processes.

"I have been summoned to appear in court this morning. I do not know what the charges are yet, but I’ll let you know after receiving the charge sheet,” he wrote.

“Let me declare that I have full confidence in our courts - they are the forum where facts, not fiction, will finally prevail. My confidence is built on irrefutable evidence and a commitment to full transparency. #FactsWillPrevail.”

The charges may relate to alleged irregularities in Transnet's multibillion-rand locomotive deals and other tenders, exposed during the Zondo Commission into State Capture, which implicated over 1 000 individuals. Volume 2 of the report, released in February 2022, spotlighted alleged corrupt practices at Transnet and Denel, recommending investigations into nearly 20 figures, including Gigaba, former Transnet Group CEO Brian Molefe, and ex-president Jacob Zuma.

However, according to News24, the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac) spokesperson Henry Mamothame said Gigaba would not appear in court on Friday.

Mamothame said Gigaba had not been placed under arrest, but was “engaging Idac” and did not specify when he would appear. He declined to comment further.
