As the third phase in the development of the 1 219-kilometre Tanzania standard gauge (SGR) railway line kicks off, the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) highlights that cargo transportation costs are expected to drop by 40% once the new train starts operations on the line.
TRC director general, Masanja Kadogosa, said construction had started on the line – covering a total of 1 219 kilometres from Dar es Salaam to the port of Mwanza – beginning with the 300 kilometres from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and 422 kilometres from Morogoro to Dodoma.
“Upon completion, the country will have a fast and modern passenger train with a speed of 160 kilometres per hour while the freight train will have a maximum speed of 120 kilometres per hour,” he said.
