The Cape Town Container
Terminal will have its
two new cranes up and
running by the first week
of October.
The terminal, which
has been down to only
two berths during parts
of September due to
the slipping forward
of the new cranes, will
significantly increase
capacity with the
introduction of the new
additions.
According to a
spokesman for Transnet
Port Terminals, the two
new cranes are part of
the terminal’s ongoing
expansion plans. “With
the introduction of the
two new cranes we will
increase TEU capacity
from 700 000 to 1.4m,” he
said.
The project, worth
some R5.4bn, saw TPT
replacing its old ship-toshore
cranes with eight
new Liebherr Super Post
Panamax cranes with twin
lift capability. Six of these
have been in place for
some time already.
