MSC merging with Ignazio Messina?

There are reports doing the rounds about talks between Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Genoa-based Ignazio Messina.

The subject was MSC acquiring a shareholding in the Italian carrier, which operates a fleet of ro-ro container ships between the Mediterranean and East and South Africa. A merger is another possibility.

MSC agreed that it had held a meeting in Genoa with Messina and funding bank Banca Carige (believed to be Messina’s main financier).

The aim of the meeting, said an MSC statement, “was the possibility of an entry by MSC Group into the shareholding of the Genoa-based group.

“MSC Group and Gruppo Messina, thanks to the availability shown by Banca Carige, will continue their dialogue with the objective to reach an agreement between them.”
