Mozambique’s impending liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is set to unlock numerous investment opportunities for South African companies in the country, according to the South African High Commissioner to Mozambique, Mandisi Mpahlwa.
Speaking at a South Africa-Mozambique Business Seminar in Pemba on Monday, Mpahlwa said South African companies needed to take full advantage of the economic prosperity under way in Mozambique.
“As South Africa we want to be part of Mozambique’s success story. We are taking a 360-degree view of these developments and are well-positioned to explore opportunities that will develop in other sectors of the economy as a result of the gas projects,” Mpahlwa said.
The discovery of natural gas reserves in the northern provinces of Mozambique has vastly changed the economic outlook of the country, with the permanent secretary of the Cabo Delgado province, Antonio Mapure, insisting the LNG projects will lead to further investment opportunities.
“The gas projects will open up opportunities for private sector investments and partnerships in various sectors of our economy such as agriculture, agro-processing, fisheries and tourism,” Mapure said.
The seminar, which kicked-off in Pemba on Monday, will run until the end of the week, and is part of an Outward Trade and Investment Mission by the Department of Trade and Industry.
The objective of the mission is to increase bilateral trade and investment between South Africa and Mozambique by exposing South African companies to opportunities that are available in Mozambique.
