Massive new terminals for Port of Rotterdam

Port of Rotterdam has confirmed that work has started on fitting-out two new container terminals located at Maasvlakte 2 – a vast zone reclaimed from the North Sea, reports Lloyds Loading List. The port authority, which is investing €1.9 billion in Maasvlakte 2, has already built the terminals’ infrastructure. A quay wall of 1 150-metres, with 20-m draft, and a 550-m quay specifically designed for barges, has been put at the disposal of the operator of one of the terminals, Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG), a consortium of DP World, APL, MOL, HMM and CMA CGM. Similarly-sized infrastucture has been built for the operator of the other terminal, APM Terminals. The first-phase of the terminals is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2014, and both RWG and APMT are each investing between €600 million and €700 million in the facilities.
