Zambia aims to commence construction of the Lobito Corridor railway – linking its Copperbelt region to Angola’s Atlantic coast – by the third quarter of 2026, Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali has said.
The cross-border infrastructure project is expected to stretch over 530 kilometres, connecting Chingola in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province to Luacano in Angola, where it will link up with the Benguela railway line.
The corridor is designed to facilitate the export of copper and agricultural products through Angola’s Port of Lobito.
“The Lobito Corridor is a key priority for the government,” Tayali said.
“We are currently engaged in financing discussions and are optimistic that construction will begin by the third quarter of 2026.”
Once completed, the railway is expected to boost regional trade, reduce transportation costs, and ease pressure on Zambia’s existing export routes through southern corridors.
