Infrastructure backlog and crime must be addressed

There are still some areas in which Portnet has not been successful. One of these is the creation of a clear picture of the future for the people in and around Portnet. There is still anxiety and uncertainty among people, many of whom do not like change and are scared of the future. Our message is that they shouldn't be scared - they should be embracing it, he said.
Other areas which need attention are the huge infrastructure backlog and problems of sources of revenue having to be realigned. We need to bring our people with us and we need better communication to convince people we have a broader agenda in port reform. We are working hard to achieve all goals of Government. This includes goals of black economic empowerment and better productivity, said Childs.
Another area he is not happy with is the high crime rate in ports. There is still too much crime in the ports. We have purchased a R20 million container scanner which will be installed and will be operational by September in Durban. If it is successful, we will get similar machines for other ports. We are also forging better relations with police and customs officials, said Childs.
