OVERPAYMENT OF wharfage on full container loads (FCLs) can be avoided if importers take note of the regulations.
Safcor points out in its latest newsletter that when values for customs purposes exceed R9000 per harbour ton, wharfage can be paid on an amount of R9000 per harbour ton, provided a packaging list is availabe to substantiate the weight/volume of the container contents.
In the absence of properly detailed packing specifications, over-payments of wharfage may occur, a spokesman explained. Portnet is not obliged to issue refunds in such instances.
