Truck traffic on the N1 between Hanover and Richmond has been badly affected by a thick blanket of snow covering the upper Karoo.
Video footage shared by truck drivers show traffic backing up with snow still coming down.
According to reports trucks that were forced to brake too fast have jack-knifed.
There have also been collisions because of slippery conditions.
It has furthermore been reported that the road could be closed, although this could not be confirmed.
Inclement weather conditions currently experienced across the country are in line with warnings by the SA Weather Service that sub-zero temperatures should be expected.
This comes after a cold front made landfall in the Cape yesterday, with another in tow that's expected to prolong the icy weather.
In other news, and not entirely unrelated to the cold front, the All Truck Drivers' Foundation (ATDF) has said it is suspending protest activities against foreign nationals working in South Africa's road freight industry.
Some industry representatives believe the weather has forced the ATDF's hand in the matter, bringing welcome respite to transporters from the violent unrest seen on the country's roads last week.
