Just over a year after its inception, the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (Zemba) has announced that Hapag-Lloyd has secured a significant contract under its initiative to decarbonize ocean freight.
Pioneered by the likes of Amazon, Ikea and international non-profit policy incubator, Aspen Institute, Zemba’s objective is to drive the adoption of zero-emission shipping technologies by leveraging the combined purchasing power of its members.
Their first endeavour involves contracting carriers for shipping services from Singapore to Rotterdam, a crucial trade route.
The decision to award Hapag-Lloyd this contract underscores the company's capability to meet the stringent emissions standards.
A spokesperson for Zemba said: "Hapag-Lloyd's commitment to environmental sustainability aligns closely with our objectives.
“Their proven track record and readiness to embrace zero-emission solutions make them an ideal partner for this ambitious project."
Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen said the collaboration highlights the company's ongoing efforts towards cleaner maritime operations.

"Our aim is to lead the industry towards carbon neutrality, and partnerships like these are instrumental in achieving that goal."
Zemba intends to closely monitor and evaluate the outcomes of the venture.
