terry hutson DURBAN-BASED Grindrod and European-based LauritzenCool Logistics have joined forces in the distribution of land and sea based perishable cargo in South Africa. The newly formed company, LCL Grindrod, will begin operating from Cape Town, with offices in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Maputo, Johannesburg and Komatipoort, as soon as all regulatory requirements have been met. According to Johan Kruger, executive director of LCL Grindrod Southern Africa, the joint venture expects to handle 150 000 pallets of fruit to Europe, North America and the Far East during 2006. Grindrod Perishable Cargo Agents, a Grindrod subsidiary, has been listed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as the top airfreight forwarding agent for 25 years. Grindrod executive director John Jones said the merger was in line with the group’s vision of offering complete supply-chain solutions.
