THE PORT of Durban has been full of surprises with unusual cargo and unusual ships lately. Following the gilt and bronze horses (complete with Caesar on his chariot) which arrived recently bound for a casino near Johannesburg, last week it was the turn of the iron horse, in the shape of three ex-Spoornet Class 35 diesel locomotives that were loaded on board the Delmas freighter Louis, bound for Douala.
This is the second batch of locos to leave for Camrail in Cameroon, where Spoornet is involved in a partnership with the local railway. Six other diesels were previously consigned from Port Elizabeth, but a Spoornet spokesman told FTW at the dockside this week that loading of these items in PE had been problematic in terms of getting the machines close alongside.
As the three locos in question were already in Durban it made more sense to consign them from this port, while Delmas was brought in because they operate a regular service to Douala. Associated company SDF handled all the freight forwarding requirements, while John T Rennie planned and executed the dockside and ship logistics on behalf of Delmas.
