The Ethekwini Municipality will host an informal traders’ indaba at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre tomorrow (September 22). The event will be held simultaneously at 13 venues in different regions.
eThekwini mayor, Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda, will outline strategies to transform the city’s informal sector into an efficient and competitive economy. He will also unpack plans to upgrade infrastructure for informal traders in eThekwini following the civil unrest that crippled the sector. Stakeholders will also have an opportunity to voice their opinions on how the city can help them to take the sector forward.
According to Kaunda, the informal traders’ sector is very important to the city’s economy, contributing more than R8 billion, which translates into more than 9% of the gross domestic product. This sector is also a major provider of employment, goods, and services to lower-income groups.
