On 06 November 2024, the World Customs Organization (WCO) announced that it had hosted its 4th Data Innovation Hub (DIH) meeting on 09 October 2024, bringing together experts from intergovernmental organisations, academia, and the private sector. The meeting provided a platform for sharing the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data innovation advancements, focusing on how these technologies can benefit Customs administrations globally.
In his opening remarks, the WCO Deputy Secretary General highlighted the importance of fostering a network of practitioners as part of the WCO’s Data Strategy. He emphasised the role of the DIH as a forum for learning about new trends and innovative technologies that could reshape Customs operations. He underscored the organisation’s commitment to data-driven Customs and the need to reduce the technological gap between Member administrations through collaboration and innovation.
The morning session focused on AI Governance, with three (3) expert speakers addressing the critical role of governance in ensuring responsible AI use and regulatory compliance. Participants showed significant interest in this topic, engaging with speakers in an interactive Question and Answer (Q&A) session, demonstrating the relevance and importance of AI governance to the technology's adoption by Customs globally. An informative presentation on the International Data Masterclass of the United Kingdom (UK) Office for National Statistics was also made.
The afternoon session shifted focus to practical applications of AI for Customs operations, featuring presentations on intelligent automation and AI-powered tools. Presenters showcased how AI, in its practicality, can increase efficiency, enhance compliance, streamline processes, and improve decision-making in critical areas of Customs work. This session also included a dynamic Q&A segment, allowing participants to delve deeper into the transformative potential of these technologies.
The presentations provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of data innovation and AI in Customs, with AI governance taking centre stage. Participants from various sectors actively contributed to discussions, showcasing the importance of multistakeholder collaboration in driving technological advancements in Customs.
The WCO Data Innovation Hub will reconvene in May 2025, continuing its mission to foster cross-sectoral knowledge sharing, raise awareness of innovative data-driven solutions, and promote innovation within the global Customs community.
