I admire the South African exporter and importer who manage to run their businesses despite the daily challenges of an inefficient and disruptive supply chain, impacted by extreme weather, labour disruption and load shedding. If I could wave my wand – I would wish for radical transformation of our transport infrastructure – Safe, timeous, and efficient rail service, Capital investment in ports – ifnecessary, privatisation so they could be world class, upgraded and efficient. Respect and safety for all transporters. Roads that are maintained at high levels. Most importantly my wish is for shipping lines to balance their online systems with human interaction and valued relationships. We need competitive pricing with longer validities. Give our South African companies the tools to compete internationally by shipping their products on time.
