Growth and development in
Mozambique ports – along
with improved cargo volumes
– has sharpened the focus on
staff training in the region
with the Institute of Chartered
Shipbrokers recording an increase
in the number of registered
students in Mozambique over the
past few years.
“With this in mind, Maputo
has been registered as an
examination centre and the
Institute is committed to
ensuring that all students in
any region who are writing
examinations will have access
to an examination centre,” says
FICS Education Trust Fund
Trustee Natasha Vaughan.
The Institute has awarded
close to R200 000 in bursaries to
deserving students, she says.
More than 40 have been for
the ‘Understanding Shipping’
Certificate over the last four
years, mostly to students or
candidates not yet employed in
the industry. In addition to these,
bursaries have been awarded
for Foundation and Advanced
Diplomas to candidates who
have since become permanently
employed with local shipping
companies, adds Vaughan.
An exam prep session has
been hosted in Maputo to assist
students ahead of bi-annual
examinations.
The Institute of Chartered
Shipbrokers is an internationally
recognised network of shipping
professionals who have
knowledge, competence and
understanding of the broad
spectrum of shipping business
and who continuously work to
improve professional and ethical
standards in the industry, she
adds.
The ICS SA Education Trust
Fund sponsors candidates
already working within the
industry who show outstanding
commitment and face financial
challenges, or those who would
like to pursue a career within
the maritime field by offering
bursaries for the Understanding
Shipping course or the
Foundation Diploma.
