Dti outlines Ipap industrialisation achievements

The South African government has begun the process of enhancing the country’s industrialisation by ensuring that the Industrial Policy Action Plan (Ipap) accomplishes higher impact industrial development, said the minister of trade and industry, Dr Rob Davies.

Davies spoke in Cape Town last week where he briefed members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry on progress made in the implementation of the sixth iteration of Ipap.

In his presentation, he highlighted various positive milestones that had been achieved in the implementation of Ipap so far. These included achievements that priority sectors such as automotive, clothing and textile, metal fabrication, capital equipment, agro-processing and the green economy had attained.

“In the automotive sector, government support has taken the industry from production of 356 800 units in the year 2000 to over 566 000 units in 2014. This support has grown auto exports from 11 000 units in 1995 to over 270 000 units in 2014. Some 300 000 jobs have been created in the automotive sector,” said Davies.
