Armed attacks appear to be on the rise in Mozambique, where several cases have been reported.
A driver died when his pick-up truck was ambushed by armed men in the Gondola district in central Mozambique this week while several people died after a minibus was ambushed along a main road in a northern Mozambique province last month. A vehicle belonging to the district administration was attacked and set on fire last year.
According to police spokesperson Mateus Mindu, the attack took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Amatongas area near the main road from Beira to Zimbabwe.
Reports suggest the attackers belong to the ‘armed men of Renamo’, a dissident militia faction that opposes ongoing peace efforts between Frelimo and Renamo, the leading political entities in Mozambique.
The murder of the driver and sporadic violence in the northern parts of Mozambique, are once again drawing attention to transport industry fears that the country will not be able to adequately guard corridor and hinterland linkage security.
This is especially relevant as Mozambique moves closer to liquid natural gas exploration in the Rovuma basin on its border with Tanzania.
No arrests have yet been made.
