On 26 September 2025, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) advised that the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, whose name was changed to Department of Electricity and Energy, no longer requires a letter of authority from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), in terms of the Prohibited and Restricted Imports and Exports List, for tariff subheading 8523.52.10.
For ease of reference:
- Tariff Chapter 85: Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles.
- Tariff Heading 85.23: Discs, tapes, solid-state non-volatile storage devices, “smart cards” and other media for the recording of sound or of other phenomena, whether or not recorded, including matrices and masters for the production of discs (excluding products of Chapter 37):
- Tariff Subheading 8523.52: Smart Cards
- Tariff Subheading 8523.52.10: Digital
