Eskom group chief executive (GCE) André de Ruyter would leave Eskom with immediate effect, the parastatal announced on Thursday night after a special meeting.

Eskom said in the statement that following the convening of a special board meeting on Thursday, the board and De Ruyter had reached “mutual agreement” to curtail his notice period to February 28. His initial notice period was supposed to run until March 31, after he announced his resignation in December.

“The board further resolved that Mr de Ruyter will not be required to serve the balance of his notice period but that he will be released from his position with immediate effect. Acting GCE arrangements are being finalised with the shareholder minister and will be communicated shortly,” Eskom said.

De Ruyter’s sudden departure from the power utility comes after eTV aired an interview with him on Wednesday in which he alleged that it appeared that Cabinet members were aware of the widespread corruption at the struggling parastatal.
