Cutting unemployment poses a significant challenge - Zuma

South African President Jacob Zuma.

Meeting its plan to cut unemployment and boost growth will be a “serious struggle”, owing to the global economic shutdown, said President Jacob Zuma.

“You can’t say when the economy is not growing that your original plans will be implemented as they were,” Zuma told Bloomberg. “There will be an impact, which will mean that in terms of how we meet them will be a serious struggle.”

South Africa’s unemployment rate has risen to 25.5% in the third quarter, from 25.1% in the previous three months, according to Bloomberg. This is a testament to the country’s challenge of creating jobs amid falling commodity prices.
